Since its introduction in the early 1970s, the Hutchins Model 4500 has been one of our best-selling finishing sanders — trusted by professionals for its legendary balance, durability, and precision. With its beautiful high-quality chrome shroud and sturdy single-piece aluminum body, the 4500 isn’t just a sander, it’s a work of art that also happens to be the best in ultra-fine finishing.

The 4500 is balanced to such a fine degree that it can be comfortably operated with a single finger. This extraordinary level of stability, combined with its heavier aluminum housing, dampens vibration to an ultra-low level. For many operators, this means less fatigue over long shifts — and for those already living with Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS/white finger), it can mean the ability to keep working when other sanders become unmanageable.

Equipping yourself with the 4500 early in your career also means protecting your hands for the long term. Many of our customers tell us stories of using their 4500s for decades — even into retirement. We’ve had 80-year-old craftsmen call to order a new pad so they can keep working on cars with their children and grandchildren. That’s the kind of longevity and trust that defines the Hutchins 4500.

Other design refinements include a flex-cover grip to reduce strain, a Positive-Action Drive with 4-bearing support for efficient power transfer, and an oversized drive head that eliminates pad wobble for uniform results. The optional #1839 handle further reduces vibration transfer and adds control for all-day comfort.

A built-in pad release system makes abrasive changes quick and efficient, keeping workflow smooth in demanding shop environments.

Random Orbital Sanders

  • Because they leave no repeating pattern, they are often used for final preparation before and after the painting application.
  • Even though they are popular for finishing, there are Random Orbitals that are excellent for all stages of sanding.

Orbital Sanders

  • These sanders are known for consistent results and excel where you need solid material removal and flexible performance.
  • Because of their regular orbits, these sanders are well-liked for material processing that is more forgiving than straight-line sanders.

Straight Line Sanders

  • Excels at blocking and material processing.
  • Low vibration and smaller "shortboard" options available.

Vacuum Sanders

  • Vacuum Sanding have both Vacuum-System Ready and Dust-Free Versions. Dust-Free can perform vacuum operations without a vacuum system.
  • Every Model has a Vacuum or Dust-Free Version Available. All Sanders can be later upgraded to vacuum-compatability.

Water/Wet Sanders

  • Ideal for finishing and more delicate processing where heat is a concern. Also used to assist in dust control where vacuum systems are unavailable or unreasonable to equip.
  • Our Water Sanders are equipped with a Patented "Thru-the-Pad" distribution system that enables a steady, regular flow of water to your surface. Most Models are equipped with a filtered 'water bell' that can be dropped into any source of clean water (like a 5-gallon bucket).

Speed Files

  • Good for careful planing or finishing up blocking stages where you want that extra bit of control over your contours.
  • Extremely popular is our PF-16 which is made from a firm plastic frame. Many customers like the rigid structure that gives just the perfect amount of flex when required.
  • The AF-16 was featured in the movie, Shawshank Redemption in the last scene when Andy Dufrene sands his boat on the beach in Baja California.

Accessories

  • Highlights:
  • Grounded air-lines. Made with food-grade hose that ensures clean and quality air, copper grounded lines for anti-static properties, and high-quality brass fittings. Extremely light-weight with anti-kink properties.
  • Custom-Sized Foam Interface Pads rated up to 13,000RPM.
